Using SMART for a quality learning objective.
SSpecific: Stating the language skill, form of assessment and the content of the assessment (text/picture/table??). eg. Pupils should be able to write…sentences….to describe the actions and the situations in the picture given.
MMeasurable: Providing measurable assessment by stating the expected outcome in number. eg. 5 sentences, 3/5 sentences. In some cases, numbers might not be needed if the target outcome means all (things that come in a fixed set). eg. colours, days in a week, months…
AAttainable: The expected outcome is reasonable for pupils to achieve. Think about a mixed ability class. A minimum number has to be set. 3/5. 6/8..etc. It can refer to the complexity of the skills the pupils have to acquire. For an average to advanced class, 5 compound sentences might be achievable whereas the weak class 5 simple sentences are good enough. Or a mix of 1 compound and 4 simple sentences. This depends on which skill to be used for the LO before setting the number.
RRelevant: The LO is for real. Pupils are to learn skills with the content (stimulus(i) / content) that are related to them and it is within the framework of the syllabus. The pupils would have the vocabulary, source the information needed ,etc.
TTimely: Considering the time allotted for activities to gear the pupils to achieve the LO.
